Guitar and related lesson instruction sales are shooting up in a big way due to the popularity of video games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band. For this reason there is a need for solid information on where to find the best sources for learning how to play the guitar. In this article we'll go over the major differences between private lessons verses online guitar lessons.

As a guitarist for over 20 years, I have personally used both methods and think both do provide a good platform for learning. But there ARE some big differences that I'll list to hopefully help you decide which system best suit your needs. We'll start with the traditional private "one-on-one" instruction.

This is how I learned many years ago. Your choice was either group or private lessons from the local music store or teachers in your area. I had several instructors during the years I took lessons and they were all different. Some were better musicians than they were teachers, and vice versa. I had one who favored his personal style of guitar playing and knew little outside of that. You may outgrow some teachers over time as you improve and want to branch out to different styles.

All in all private "one-on-one" instruction is better than"group lessons" as you'll have the teacher all to yourself and can ask questions and get answers when needed. Today the average private lesson costs about $30 per half hour or $60 for a full hour. You'll also need to factor in the time it takes to drive to wherever he or she may be and when the classes are offered.

Now the question is "how many of these lessons will you need?" As we all learn at different speeds, how many hours you will need with that instructor to get to where you want to be on the guitar is unknown and could get expensive!

Let's now take a look at what online guitar lessons have to offer us. I found this to be a large and growing market due to the appeal of the internet and advantages it presents. First thing is that you can get pretty close to that "one-on-one" private instructor feeling online. Meaning that the videos are recorded as if you were sitting right there with them "one-on-one."The instructors talk out loud to themselves as if you were there to answer so it's pretty cool and easy for you to feel involved. Another nice feature is that you can pause at any point to go back over something until you get it right.
